It’s a long and strenuous stage unless you break it up and stay overnight in Unterstmatt, for example.
From Forbach, the trail first climbs to the Mariahilf Chapel. It then continues uphill, alternating between forest roads and steep forest trails, climbing ever higher until it reaches an elevation of 1,000 meters at Seekopf – the first point in Germany to reach this altitude. The route continues almost flat to the Badener Höhe with its observation tower. Then it descends on a forest road to Sand; just before reaching Sand, there is a place to stop for refreshments at the Naturfreundehaus Badener Höhe. From Sand, the trail runs parallel to the road to the Hundseck. Then the Westweg moves slightly further away from the road and leads over the Hochkopf to Unterstmatt.
From Unterstmatt, follow the well-marked forest trails – which are quite rocky in places – up to the Hornisgrinde. From the Hornisgrinde, take the footpath – which is steep in places – down to Mummelsee.
