Stage description
From the Thurner Pass, the route first follows the B500, passing the "Süßes Häusle". The landscape alternates between woodland and open fields. At Doldenbühl (1,098 m above sea level), the route even takes you across a pasture with magnificent views.
At the "Landsitz am Westeg" hill, take a sharp left. East of the Weistannenhöhe (including the mountain hut), you reach the highest point of today’s stage. You are at 1,192 metres above sea level. Here, a memorial commemorates two cousins from Mannheim who were murdered whilst out hiking in 1928.
You can stop for a rest at Bergäusle, or if you’d like to shorten the hike, you can stay the night here. A short while later, from the E1, you can already see the ski jump in Hinterzarten. Before you reach the B500 again north of Titisee, you lose another 300 metres in altitude over a distance of five kilometres. After all that time spent in nature, it feels strange to be walking along roads.
A small wooden bridge crosses the Altenwegbächle stream, and before you know it you’re in the Southern Black Forest. Just past the Catholic Church of Christ the King in Titisee-Neustadt, you’ll soon reach Lake Titisee.
A short walk past the spa gardens, and then you turn right at the spa gardens’ car park and head steeply uphill towards Bühlberg (965 m above sea level). From the Bankenhansenkreuz, the route takes you through dense woodland once more to the Kesslerhöhe (1,015 m above sea level). Here you reach the tower of the Rothaus-Schanze. It is now not far to the Kesslermühle in Hinterzarten.
After a short break at Kesslermühle, the route continues uphill for just under four kilometres, keeping a distance from the Zartenbach stream, until it reaches the "Häuslebauer" farm. Just under five kilometres further on, it is worth taking a short detour from the E1 to catch a glimpse of Feldsee. The terrain drops steeply down to Feldsee, which is the highest lake in Germany outside the Alps.
The Friedrich-Luisen Tower is both a weather station and a restricted area, so entry is prohibited.
As an alternative to the round trip to the summit of the Feldberg via the same route, the beautiful north-eastern ascent is a great option. You can spend the night along the way, for example at the Naturfreundehaus.

Feldberg
The Feldberg is with 1493m above sea level the highest elevation of the Black Forest and all German low mountain ranges. It is therefore also the highest point of the E1 in Germany.
