From Wilhelmshöhe, the route heads south at first. The first two valleys, the Turnbach Valley and the Schwarzenbach Valley, mean that the first six kilometres are a constant series of ups and downs.
The dense forest thins out, and meadows and pastures become more common. Arable farming and livestock rearing, along with small farms, are transforming the landscape.
In the Elz Valley, one gradually approaches the border between the "Central Black Forest" and the "Upper Black Forest".
The source of the Elz is rather unspectacular, even though the Elz also marks a major watershed. Whereas the rivers upstream still flow into the Rhine, all subsequent rivers now flow into the Danube. The source of the Danube is also located at the ‘Kolmenhof’ mountain inn.
Back in the forest, you can marvel at the huge boulders known as the Günterfelsen. The route continues along the watershed between the Rhine (to the west) and the Danube (to the east) up to the Neueck pass (985 m above sea level). Please note: At the Staatsberghof, you’ll be tempted to carry on straight ahead, but here you must turn right to cross under the L173/B500.
After passing Neukirch, the route continues from Heubacher Höhe along the "Black Forest Motorway", the B500. These three kilometres or so are not particularly walker-friendly. But you’ll soon reach the "Kalte Herberge" at 1,000 metres above sea level. At the same time, you’ll be crossing the 48th parallel here.
The route continues along the B500 as far as the Thurner Pass, though now with more open space, so that you can once again focus on the natural surroundings, the forest and the views.
