Between Hamelin and Lemgo, the E1 follows the Hansaweg X9, crossing the border from Lower Saxony into North Rhine-Westphalia. The route then follows the Cheruskerweg X3 to the old town of Detmold. From here, the E1 climbs into the hills of the Teutoburg Forest and the Egge Mountains. It then follows the Eggeweg X1 to the Sauerland.
As well as its beautiful countryside and a number of lovely viewpoints, this section of the E1 offers numerous attractions, such as the historic town centres of Lemgo, Detmold and Obermarsberg, the Hermann Monument and the impressive Externsteine.
The route is well signposted, though not consistently marked as E1. A hike in low mountain terrain with no particular difficulties.
