5.5 Willebadessen - Marsberg

We split the stage into two parts and spent the night in Blankenrode. Beyond Willebadessen, the route mostly follows wide forest trails; the forest areas have largely disappeared due to spruce dieback, though signs of new growth are sometimes visible (as of May 2022). Smaller paths occasionally lead along the Teutonia Cliffs, and it’s worth making a short detour to Bierbaum’s Nagel. Another turnoff is located shortly after crossing the B 68. The view of the lush green clearing is beautiful, followed by a descent into the Schwarzbach Valley that is partly steep and at times somewhat difficult to navigate.

The route then follows a paved path alongside the Blankenröder Bach, climbing slowly but steadily uphill. The Hörmuseum is definitely worth a visit; located in the so-called abandoned town of Blankenrode, it offers a glimpse into life in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, we were too exhausted to explore it. In Blankenrode, the “Egge-Quelle,” a self-service kiosk, is a good tip.

Past Blankenrode, the route passes through a former galena mining area home to the rare calamine violet. The landscape then becomes more picturesque, winding through flower-filled meadows and pristine beech forests via Oesdorf and Essentho, before finally descending a long slope to Niedermarsberg. After a lovely stretch along the Diemel, the stage fittingly ends at a wonderful beer garden (“Bleichhaus”). This is also the official end of the Eggeweg.
