After Itzehoe, the route follows the Stör. At times you walk on the other side of the dyke, at other times on top of it, and through the sheep. There is little shade on this stretch. At Breitenburg Castle, which has a large golf course, the route leaves the river and you pass through a bit of woodland to reach the Breitenburg Canal. You have to follow this for quite a long time. Although the canal is lovely to look at, the path is quite overgrown and, above all, there are vast numbers of horseflies and mosquitoes. Things only improve slightly once you reach the road. There’s still some marshy ground there and there are insects, but it’s not quite as bad. At the end of this stage, Westerhorn, there’s a petrol station with a café and a small shop, as well as a railway station.
