Stage description

In a nutshell: A stage with plenty of paved roads. Some great views of Lübeck Bay (between Oevelgönne and Stawedder) and of Lübeck from Pariner Berg. The worst part: the busy county road between Pariner Berg and Horsdorf, which has no sidewalk. Several train stations are within walking distance if you want to split up the stage: Pönitz and Pansdorf (Lüneburg–Lübeck–Kiel line) as well as Haffkrug (Neustadt–Lübeck line). The start and end points of the stage also have train stations.

The stage begins at the Neustadt train station. At first, the E1 follows a narrow path between the tracks and the naval base. This is followed by a less inviting stretch through an industrial park and then along a paved bike and walking path parallel to the K45. After about 3 kilometers, the trail turns right at a signpost for Wintershagen. From here on, the trail becomes a bit more scenic. Past a few pretty older cottages, the E1 branches off to the right again and passes under the highway. Continuing through seemingly endless, rolling fields, the E1 finally reaches the Oevelgönne estate with its historic gatehouse and manor house (slightly off the trail). Continue along the road past the Altona farm to Stawedder, where you cross the B76. Shortly after, your feet can get a little rest on a short stretch through the woods, where the E1 runs parallel to the road to Gronenberg. You’ll catch your first glimpses of the Taschensee.

In Gronenberg, the E1 descends a flight of stairs to Taschensee and passes through the Dänischer Graben to reach Kleiner Pönitzer See. This is followed by a section along the eastern shore of Großer Pönitzer See.

Just before leaving the Great Pönitz Lake, you can take a break at the café at the Klingenberg Bathing Facility.

After the swimming area, the E1 leaves the lake and, following a short stretch through natural surroundings, passes through a residential area again. This is followed by another section of trail through natural surroundings and then the village of Schürsdorf. After Schürsdorf, the trail follows a gravel road for a good 2 kilometers, which is also used by cars. In some places, the dust is very unpleasant.

For the most part, the route continues in much the same way. A stretch through natural surroundings, then back onto or alongside the road. The most unpleasant section - the county road between Pariner Berg and Horsdorf, which has no sidewalk - was already mentioned at the beginning. From Pariner Berg, the E1 continues along the road for a while before veering back toward more natural surroundings just before Bad Schwartau.
