Stage description

From Schönborn, the trail first heads slightly uphill through the forest and then descends gently to a small paved road. This road then runs southward below Hohlenfels Castle (we encountered hikers who had missed Hohlenfels!). Past Hohlenfels, the trail soon turns right, continuing uphill on pavement for a short while before following well-marked forest paths to Bonscheuer. Continue through the forest past the source of the Mattenbach, then ascend for longer stretches on forest roads until the trail finally turns left and heads eastward down to Aarbergen-Kettenbach. Passing shopping centers and through a company grounds, then turning left uphill through a wooded area, the route continues through fields past a glider airfield. This is followed by a long stretch through the forest, interrupted only by the descent to Hennethal. After several more hours on forest roads and crossing a major highway, the route descends steeply to Oberauroff. There, turn left through the valley to Niederauroff, then right over a hill and under the highway down to Idstein.
