From Herdorf, head south uphill and then continue slightly to the left at the Jakobshäuschen. After the next intersection, instead of taking the forest road marked E1, you can take the more scenic path running parallel to it on the right. The route continues uphill on wide paths through the forest, and shortly after the surprising bike maintenance station high up, turn left for a short stretch on trails, but after a short distance, turn right onto the road and continue to the Hohenseelbachskopf. The E1 bypasses its highest point to the left (east), and you soon reach the ridge trail again, which leads southeast for several kilometers (about 6 km). The trail is currently largely destroyed by clear-cutting and leads past the Trödelsteine. The final stretch before Lippe continues on asphalt.
From Lippe, the route follows roads for a while, passes through the industrial park near the airfield, and then follows the bike path to Liebenscheid. From Liebenscheid to the Fuchskaute, you can follow the Rothaarsteig trail markers instead of the E1; it’s just as long but has slightly fewer paved sections. From Liebenscheid, veering east off the road, the route heads to Weißenberg, where you turn left uphill toward the Ketzerstein. From Ketzerstein to Fuchskaute, the route goes mostly through dead forest, and because of the numerous changes in direction, you should follow the markings – either the E1 or the Rothaarsteig. Fuchskaute itself now feels quite “privatized”; the best rest spot is just before it, with a forest bench and a view to the south.
