09.21 Casone Aresta - San Rufo

From Casone, take a sloping path heading south-west, which leads through open countryside and beech woods. The path continues downhill towards Varco dello Schiavo along a narrow white road, which joins other mountain paths and the turn-off to the Pertosa Caves. Following the signpost, take a path heading east, which shortly afterwards becomes a gravel track through the beech forest of Corleto.

After a rest at the only spring along the way, follow a path through the Campo di Cerabona, where you can see cows and horses grazing. At the Pozzo Pramezzo spring, we cross a forest of ancient beech trees and finally reach Pozzo Melaino, where we come to a small road that climbs up to the viewing terrace at Casino Sierro, offering a beautiful view of the Diano valley.

The route continues along an ascending mule track heading south-west. At the Acqua dei Tassi waterfall, we pass through an impressive forest of tall beech trees, interspersed with yews and holly. At the end of the climb, you can take a break on the panoramic summit of Monte di Spina dell’Ausino (1,441 m) by turning left at the junction with the gravel track coming up from Piazza del Cersao.

From the summit of Monte di Spina dell'Ausino, you can admire the valley of Diano, surrounded by mountain ranges. Returning to the junction, follow the gravel road down to Piazza del Ceraso, turn left at the crossroads (heading east) and continue down through the Vallone del Triglio to the historic centre of San Rufo.
