The route through the forest starts off on level ground and then gradually climbs, passing several streams and, after about half an hour, a spring. It is essential to top up your water supplies here, as there are no further opportunities to do so until the end of the stage in August and September – and even then, only if the staffed rifugio is open. After the La Verginetta junction, you leave the trees behind and begin a steep ascent over Monte Belvedere to Monte Rotondo. From here, the path follows the highest ridge for hours, offering magnificent views on both sides. However, the utmost concentration is required at all times and there is no option to walk on less exposed paths parallel to the ridge – so good weather is a must for this stage! At the end of the stage – provided you have booked in advance – a well-equipped rifugio awaits, or alternatively an unstaffed mountain hut with four metal beds, which is always open.
