First, follow the path along the lake until you reach the second refuge. From there, head briefly downhill along the road, then turn right onto a path leading uphill to Lago Baccio. Here, you walk briefly along its shore and then uphill to the highest peak of the E1 in the Apennines, Monte Rondinaio. From there, the route descends steeply to Foce a Giovo. Shortly afterwards, turn right onto path 519 towards Passo Annibale and from there continue uphill to Lago Piatto, where you briefly return to path 519 and follow it until it turns left at a metal sign for skiers. Here, continue straight ahead, following the marker posts onto the GEA. Following this, the route now descends to the Lago Nero refuge. You now continue on Trail 102, initially steeply downhill, then staying at the same altitude, until a large wooden sign indicates Trail 80 branching off to the left, which you now follow. The route continues along a wide forest track to Abetone. If you follow the road uphill to the main village, you will find a hotel that is also open in summer.
This stage is part of the Grande Escursione Appenninica (GEA) and Alta Via dei Parchi (AVP) hiking trails.
