Stage description

In Montepiano, turn right at a sharp angle at the chemist’s and then follow the clearly marked 00 route. This stage runs mainly along forest paths and partly along forest tracks (the latter becoming very, very muddy or even impassable in wet weather!). Take care when you hear the sound of engines approaching: motocross is popular here – and apparently permitted – and none of the riders seem to expect to find walkers on the tracks. The final half-hour is then along a deserted road to Passo della Futa, where, opposite the military cemetery at the roundabout, a road branches off to the left, with an albergo appearing a few metres further on. An alternative place to stay is in Traversa, 2 km to the north, which is also served by a bus – running at frequent intervals during the week.
