In Liguria, the E1 follows the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri (Ligurian High Route). Here, the trail runs continuously through the Apennine Mountains. Much of the route is forested, but there are also open sections offering spectacular views. In some places, fantastic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Apennines, and the Alps open up.
Although the terrain isn’t as high as in the Alps, the trails have some steep ascents and descents in places. This means you’ll need sure-footedness and good physical conditioning. Some of the more exposed sections can be bypassed.
The trail is consistently well-marked and mostly in good condition. Accommodations are generally available along the trail or in the immediate vicinity. At many stops along the route, it is possible to arrive or depart by bus. In Crocetta d'Orero, there is a stop on a narrow-gauge railway line to Genoa. Ideal for arrival and departure or for a day trip to the coastal city.
