This section is very well marked (Alta Via Monti Liguri). The trails are well-maintained, and the route offers spectacular views as it winds along limestone ridges. Some of the ascents and descents are very steep, so hiking poles are helpful here. One of the most beautiful stretches of the E1 trail is undoubtedly the ridge crossing Monte Spina. Noteworthy are the increasingly common Mediterranean plant species, such as asphodel and tree heath.
This stage is easily accessible from Genoa via the narrow-gauge railway. After about 7 kilometres, there is a place to stop for refreshments or an overnight stay in Creto, as well as a bus stop (bus to Genoa). At Colle di Monte Lago and at the pass just before the climb up to Monte Carmo, there are benches and tables where you can rest. In Scoffera, you’ll find the last place to buy provisions before Abetone. The Ristorante Alessandro in Scoffera is highly recommended. Alternatively, there is the Pizzeria Al Gallo Cedrone (about a 20-minute walk).
