Those staying in Cabanne can either take the bus to the pass or follow a short footpath up to Passo del Bozale and on to the Alta Via. The climb takes about 45 minutes. The path is overgrown in places and crosses a river several times, but is generally passable.
The E1/Alta Via follows a lovely path that is mostly uphill through shady woodland, with only a few vantage points.
Shortly before reaching Passo delle Lame, however, we finally come to a beautiful, more open area, and the view stretches out once more all the way to the sea. At Passo delle Lame, the path turns left onto a wide track. A little further on, there is a small flight of steps in a wall. From here, the path climbs steeply through the forest for some time. Eventually, the terrain opens up and the highlight of today’s stage, Monte Aiona (1,701 m), comes into view.
Both of its peaks offer magnificent panoramic views. The route continues on a gentle descent to the day’s destination, the Passo della Spingarda. As the Rifugio Monte Aiona is currently closed (as of 2022), you might wish to spend the night at the Rifugio Casermette del Monte Penna or the Malga Zanoni.
