03.03 Passo della Scoffera - Barbagelata

A beautiful route with stunning views. A detour to the summit of Monte Lavangnola is highly recommended.

In Scoffera, follow a small road for a few hundred metres. Don’t miss the narrow path that branches off to the left here. It climbs quite steeply through the woods towards Monte Castelluzzo (850 m) and then on to Monte Lavagnola. There are lovely views to enjoy along the way. At Colle Nord Monte Lavagnola there is a small seating area where you can rest, but we highly recommend making a detour to the summit (1,113m). From there you have a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside and the sea, and there are benches here too where you can rest.

Following forest paths, we reach the "Passo del Portello" about halfway along the route. From here, the route follows the quiet road for about 2 kilometres. The "Case Poggio" B&B offers its guests a free shuttle service from the pass to the B&B and back. 

At Sella Della Giassina, the E1 branches off onto a gravel road. After about 1.5 kilometers, you can turn right to reach the B&B Case Poggio. However, the E1 continues to climb steeply toward the end of the stage in Barbagelata.

The unstaffed Rifugio Barbagelata is located in Barbagelata; unfortunately, overnight stays there are not currently possible (as of May 2022). However, the following alternatives are available for overnight stays:

The B&B Case Poggio:
A very family-run establishment with warm and welcoming hosts who are happy to prepare dinner for hikers. Keep in mind, however, that the next leg of the hike can be quite long. That said, it can easily be shortened.

The Rifugio Caucaso:
A spectacular view of the sea. However, the Rifugio Caucaso only offers lodging on an irregular basis (as of May 2022). To get there, turn right at the sign just before the AV trail meets the road at Barbagelata.

The Drago Bianco B&B: You can reach it by extending the route by 4 km until you cross the road to Sbarbari – following the quiet road, you’ll reach the Drago Bianco B&B via a side track on the hillside, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner on request. The marked paths back to the ridge are very overgrown; it is better to return via the road to the main path. 

An alternative to the end of the stage in Barbagelata is a detour to the Rifugio Caucaso with a magnificent view of the sea (the Rifugio Caucaso does not currently offer accommodation, as of May 2022). You can get there if you turn right before the AV meets the road before Barbagelata, following a sign.
