Stage description

From Passo della Springarda, the route first takes you through the forest to Passo dell’Incisa. If you don’t mind an extra climb, you should consider a detour to the summit of Monte Penna (highly recommended, easy to walk, approx. 45-minute climb from Passo dell’Incisa). From there, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view. In good conditions, it is possible to see as far as Corsica and the western and central Alps. We were even able to identify individual Alpine peaks (we definitely recognised Monviso in the Western Alps; according to the summit app, the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Ortler and many other well-known mountains were also visible).

From Passo dell'Incisa, the route initially winds gently up and down through the forest. However, you’ll soon be treated to stunning views of the sea and the surrounding mountains once again. The path now becomes a little more challenging and is somewhat exposed in places. Sure-footedness is essential, and there are a few spots where you’ll need to do a bit of light climbing. This section is a real highlight.

If you wish to avoid this difficult section, you can turn right at Passo Dei Porcelletti and rejoin the Alta Via a little further on at Passo della Scaletta (please refer to the map for the exact route, as there are several junctions to watch out for).

For the most part, the route is mainly downhill or follows scenic, panoramic paths at a higher altitude. The only exception is a short but steep climb up Monte Ghiffi

At Passo del Ghiffi, the path unfortunately meets a road again, which we follow for the last three kilometres. Fortunately, there isn’t much traffic on it. At the end of the stage at Passo del Bocco, the Rifugio del Bocco and the Ristorante da Annamaria offer accommodation and refreshments. There is also a bus service here to Carasco and on towards the valley and the coast. However, it runs rather infrequently.
