You definitely shouldn’t miss this stage or the next one, even though you can save a few kilometers and some elevation gain by following the Scrivia River (see comments on Stage 02.01). The trail is well marked (as E1 and Sentiero 124) and runs mostly along beautiful paths. In Tortona, the route follows small roads through a lovely residential area before the E1 continues along field and forest paths. At the SP130, you must turn right and follow the road for a short distance, even though the temptation to take a shortcut via the dirt road is strong. However, you would then have to cross the Torrente Ossona, which should be no problem in summer but is not in spring.
The route then winds slowly upward through a beautiful valley into the mountains. On every hill sits a picturesque village with a church, and there are fantastic views of the mountains and the Po Valley everywhere you look. In Montale Celli there is a fountain, and just past the village is the Montesoro campground. Near San Alosio stand two old tower ruins. Be sure to enjoy the view from the summit of Monte San Vito. The marl can be uncomfortably slippery after rain on this stage and all subsequent ones.
