The first section of the E1 was opened in Sicily in April 2016. It runs through seven extremely varied stages, from the Rocche Argimusco in the Nebrodi Mountains, through the Malbotta Forest, the Alcantara Valley and the Etna Park, to Nicolosi.
Further sections in the north and south of Sicily were due to open in 2018, but this has not yet come to fruition. The route shown here is based on OpenStreetMap and is intended to correspond largely to the planned official route.
The final E1 route is set to run northwards from Messina through the Peloritani Mountains, then from Mount Etna via Catania to its southern terminus at Capo Passero or Isola delle Correnti.
In January and February, the Pista Altomontana on Mount Etna is usually only accessible on snowshoes. Otherwise, the E1 trail in Sicily is accessible all year round, although it is worth bearing in mind that it gets very hot during the summer months of July and August.
