11.07 Malvagna - Castiglione di Sicilia

In Malvagna, the E1 follows the main road downhill towards Monte Mojo. Just before this volcanic cone, the path turns sharply to the left. After a few hundred metres, there is an opportunity to take a detour up Monte Mojo (approx. 45 mins), which offers a superb panoramic view in all directions. The road continues downhill towards the village of Mojo Alcantara. Just before reaching it, not far from the path, you can visit the first of two ‘Cuba Bizantina’ (7th-century chapels). To do so, simply follow the road branching off to the left for a few hundred metres. However, the gate to the chapel may be locked.

Walk straight through the village of Mojo Alcantara. After crossing a bridge over the River Alcantara, the path branches off to the left; from here, it is once again clearly marked as the E1. A beautiful stretch through the Alcantara Valley follows. Here you will encounter the first lava fields, as well as gardens and fields where grapes, olives and hazelnuts are grown. Shortly before Castiglione di Sicilia, the path reaches the Cuba bizantina di Santa Domenica. After 200 metres, it is worth leaving the path to treat your feet to a dip in the wild, rushing Alcantara River. From here, it is not far to the village of Castiglione di Sicilia, where there are places to stay and shops.
