From here on, the E1 follows the Pista Altomontana (701). This main hiking trail circles the entire Mount Etna once over its full length.
After Rifugio Santa Maria, about 15 kilometres from the start of the Pista Altomontana, you must leave the main path and turn left. At this point, you cross the lava flow from 1981. At Rifugio Monte Spagnolo (no water), you rejoin the Pista Altomontana, which you follow to Rifugio Monte la Nave.
Depending on the desired length of the stage, this stage can also be shortened or extended to include one of the other mountain huts.
