Stage description

The northernmost stage of E1.

After the ceremonial start with a large stone at the North Cape, you’ll find two more stones embedded in the ground with the inscription “E 1” on the plateau leading up to the steep cliff above Hornvika. But that’s all there is in the way of markings on Mageröya for now.

You then continue southward along the road or close to it until you reach the parking lot for the trail to Knivskjellodden. Even after that, there isn’t really a defined path. Ultimately, you can walk pretty much anywhere in the area. The DNT’s suggested route is to stay west of the road, walk west around Lake Kjeftavatnet, and then head back toward the road. There are tracks from reindeer and people, but neither a clear path nor any markings.

Both the bus to and from the North Cape and the Flexx bus to Gjesvaer stop at the Skarsvåg intersection (advance booking required by phone or online).
