Arrival and departure / Drop-off points
The jetties at Namsvatnet (Stage 5.27), Kleiva (6.01 + 6.02), Stage 6.03, Skjelstad (6.06 + 6.07) and Teveltunet (6.18) are located on busy roads.
Some places/huts can be reached via farm tracks (Gressamoen, Vera, Ferslia)
Shopping facilities
In Nord-Trøndelag, the route passes a supermarket only once, in Skorovatn (and this one doesn’t stock the usual hiking provisions either). However, where the route crosses the main roads, it’s easy to hitch a lift to the nearest town and back. Good options here include:
- Røyrvik, 12 km south of Bustadmo (Stage 6.01) / 15 km east of Kleiva (6.02 + 6.03)
- Sandvika, 10 km west of Skjelbredtunet (6.06 + 6.07)
- Sandvika (another place with the same name; Stage 6.16), Road 72 heading east.
- Storlien, 5 km east of Teveltunet
In addition, all DNT huts in Nord-Trøndelag stock provisions, although these are slightly more expensive there than in the supermarket. Shopping in Sweden is generally cheaper than in Norway.
Alternative routes
Many walkers skip the unmarked sections 6.01 and 6.02 and follow the road.
Some hikers walk directly (as the crow flies) from Gaundalen to Veresstua. The terrain there is said not to be too challenging. Some sections consist of unmarked paths (stages 6.12 to 6.14).
According to some reviews, it is also a good route to walk from Midtre Nesavantnet via Snåsa (shops, railway station) to Sætertjønnhytta (stages 06.05 to 06.12).
About 4.5 km before Teveltunet (roughly near the dam), a path branches off towards Storlien. The path is marked on the Swedish map and is easy to follow; it is just the actual turn-off that is somewhat hidden. From Storlien, you can continue along the Southern Kungsleden.
Lodging situation
This section is not suitable for a hut-to-hut hike (only stages 6.13–6.18 have a sufficiently well-developed network of facilities).
Skorovasshøtta (stages 6.03 + 6.04), Finnkruhøtta* (06.04), Holden Fjellgård (6.10 + 6.11), Skjækerdalshytta (6.12 + 6.13), Setertjønnhytta (6.13 + 6.14), Veresstua (6.14 + 6.15), Bellingstua (6.15 + 6.16), Ferslia (6.16 + 6.17) and Angeltjønnhytta (6.17 + 6.18) are DNT huts (Nord-Trøndelag Tourist Association).
Accommodation in Bustadmo (6.01), Midtre Nesåvatnet (6.04 + 6.05), Kviltjønnhytta (6.05 + 6.06), Almdalshytta (6.07 + 6.08), Gressåmoen (6.08 + 6.09) and Langvasshytta must be booked in advance – usually including prior collection of keys. (Please feel free to add your own reviews!)
Gaundalen Farm (6 November and 6 December) seems to be constantly busy during the hiking season – highly recommended.
* Please note: Finnkruhøtta is closed for two weeks every September. (See here for specific dates)
Unmarked sections
Stages 6.01, 6.02, 6.05, 6.07, 6.08, 6.09 and 6.12 are unmarked.
Stage 6.03 consists of 3 km of dirt track and 16 km of tarmac. On stage 6.06, you mostly follow dirt tracks and winter markings. Stage 6.10 is well-trodden but not ‘officially’ marked. On stage 6.11, it was still easy to follow the old telephone line in 2021 – according to recent reports, only a few of the telephone line’s masts remain.
The remaining stages (6.04 and 6.13–6.18) are marked with the usual T-markings.
