Stage description
This stage is a real scenic highlight. Once you can tear yourself away from the stunning views at Dividalshytta, you’ll first face a steep descent to the Divielva River. In this sheltered area, you’ll even find mixed forest along the riverbank – a very unusual sight in this region. After a short stretch downstream, the E1 crosses the Divielva via a bridge. You need to pay close attention here at the junction, because the trail continuing north toward the settlement of Frihetsli is also very well-trodden and visible, so that many hikers instinctively head in that direction.
On the other side of the river, follow the Anjavasselva, staying close to the bank and enjoying fantastic views of the wild river. The well-maintained, dry trail and the magnificent views make for an absolutely delightful hike, especially during the first half along the river. If you’re still using old hiking maps, be careful: there’s an older trail route a bit further up the river, but it’s now completely overgrown and very difficult to walk on. About halfway along the river, you’ll cross a tributary via a bridge (there are also good campsites here). From here on, the trail winds increasingly through birch forest and the terrain becomes somewhat marshy. Eventually, the trail leaves the river and climbs noticeably uphill toward Vuomahytta. Be sure to look back regularly at the Njunis glaciers, which provide a stunning backdrop to conclude this stage.
