On this stage, the E1 enters truly alpine terrain for the first time. At first, however, the route remains relatively flat. You follow the ATV tracks toward the Swedish border. During the 5 km you walk through Sweden on this stage, you’ll need to cross a river that isn’t deep but is very wide and has many branches. After crossing back into Norway, the valley you’re walking through gets narrower and narrower, and the landscape becomes increasingly rocky. At an altitude of about 1,000 meters, you finally reach the pass, and the trail descends quite steeply and rockily into Isdalen. Due to its southern exposure, it is significantly greener and more pleasant here. Passing a waterfall, the valley opens up toward Rostadalen, offering great views of this wide valley. A long, gentle descent finally leads down to the Rostaelva. Shortly before Rostahytta, the Nordkalottleden joins from the east; here it heads toward Sweden and does not run alongside the E1 for two stages. With its location by the river and views of the surrounding mountains, Rostahytta is not only beautifully situated but also extremely comfortable.
