03.11 Pålnostugan - Abisko Turiststation

On this stage, the E1 returns to civilization. At first, the trail continues through the forest, staying close to the lakeshore until it reaches the bridge over the Njuoraeatnu. From here on, the trail becomes a bit easier and the landscape more open. However, it remains quite rocky. Finally, the trail crosses European Route 10. On the other side of the road, you’ll come across the Rallarvägen, a hiking trail that runs parallel to the railroad tracks and features information boards about the construction of the railway. While the first section along the Báktájohkaluobbalat is still very secluded, things get a bit livelier starting at the former railroad workers’ settlement of Torne hamn.

The trail continues slightly above the lake, offering hikers some beautiful views. Small streams repeatedly cross the path and flow toward the lake. The landscape is lush and green. You’ll even pass through a small town called Björkliden (which has a train station and lodging options). The scenery remains similar as you continue on to the Abisko Tourist Station, the northern starting point of the Kungsleden. Here you’ll find a large hiker’s lodge and a train station where night trains from Stockholm and Narvik arrive.

If you find the route from Lappjordhytta to Abisko too long, you can spend the night in Björkliden or take a bus or train to Abisko (or back). The next leg to Abiskojaure isn’t that long either and is fairly easy to hike, so splitting the trip into Lappjordhytta–Björkliden and Björkliden–Abiskojaure is a good option.
