02.04 Nedrefosshytta - Saraelv

Those who can tear themselves away from the comfortable Nedrefosshytta will be rewarded right away on this leg with magnificent views of the Reisaelva valley. Later on, the trail moves closer to the river, and you’ll increasingly have to make your way through thickets of birch and ferns. Several small, mostly open huts line the trail, including Sieimahytta, which can be reached by a rowboat provided on-site. Just past the Sieimahytta huts, a technically more challenging section awaits hikers, featuring a boulder field right along the riverbank.

Several waterfalls plunge into the Reisadalen valley along the trail, the largest and most impressive of which is the Mollisfossen. Another highlight is the opportunity to admire Bronze Age rock carvings on the opposite bank near Sieimahytta.

If you’d prefer an easier route, take the path at Sieimastua that runs through the forest above the shore and eventually joins the forest road. The main trail also eventually meets the forest road, and shortly after that, you can decide whether to follow the road that leads directly to the visitor center with the Nordkalottstua (bookable by phone and opened with a code) or to take the historic path through the thicket along the riverbank. At the boat landing, you’ll have another chance to climb up to the visitor center and enjoy the view there or spend the night in the cabin. However, you’ll usually wait in vain for staff or open doors in the sprawling complex.

The two trails eventually merge again and lead to the Vildmarksenter in Saraelv, which is currently being rebuilt as of 2022. In the future, visitors will likely be able to book boat tours here, though there probably won’t be any accommodations available.
