This section follows the Kungsleden, by far the most popular long-distance hiking trail in Scandinavia. As a result, you can expect to encounter more fellow hikers on this section than on any other in Scandinavia.
The trailhead is right next to the Kiruna-Narvik railway line; the hostel (tourist station) is located just north of the tracks, while the train station is on the south side. After a short stretch of road, the Kungsleden trail begins just a few meters from the train station.
Most of this section runs through birch forests along the Abiskojåkka River. There are beautiful views along the way, especially near the tourist station, where the river flows through a small gorge, and from a small hilltop (known as “Meditationsplats”). After about 4 km, you’ll reach the Nissonjokk campground, which has restrooms, picnic areas, and trash cans, but doesn’t require the usual fees charged at STF huts.
About halfway along the route, the hiking trail joins the cross-country ski and snowmobile trails. As a result, the paths become wider and lose some of their charm. Eventually, you reach Abiskojaure, which feeds the Abiskojåkka. The landscape becomes somewhat more open and marshy, but this is not a problem for hikers thanks to the boardwalks.
At the end of the lake, you must leave the Kungsleden trail by crossing a bridge over the Kamajåkka, a tributary of the lake, and head toward the STF Abiskojaure hut. The next leg of the trail toward Unna Allakas begins right at the campsite.
The route has no significant inclines and is easy to walk. The only potential issue is the occasionally rocky terrain.
This stage is part of the Nordkalottruta / Nordkalottleden / Kalottireitti and Grensesømmen hiking trails.
