Although this stage is relatively short at 12 km, it’s quite challenging. Just past the Cáihnavággihytta, a large boulder field begins that will keep hikers busy for the next 8 km.
The first section is already rocky, but still flat along the lower lake; as the path rises gently toward the next lake, you cross the connecting river at the outlet of the upper lake. It’s a feat you can barely manage without getting your feet wet. Then, with the ascent toward the pass, the most difficult part of the stage begins. The trail leads along the higher and rockier eastern shore of the lake. However, some reports recommend passing the lake along the western shore—provided the snow doesn’t reach all the way to the lake.
Once you reach the top of the pass, the terrain remains rocky, but the area is pleasantly sheltered from the wind between the mountains. At 1,200 meters, you have reached the highest point of the E1 in Scandinavia. The trail continues downhill across boulder fields toward Gautelisvatnet.
The trail splits at an unmarked signpost: from there, it’s only a few kilometers to Gautelishytta on the left-hand path. If you turn right, you’ll take the shortcut to Skoaddejávrehytta.
