This stage runs from the lower end to the upper end of Sårjåsjávrre. With a total elevation gain of about three meters between the two ends, it is a largely flat stage. Nevertheless, it is a scenically stunning stage, as you hike between the foothills of Blåmannsisen on the right and the glaciers of the Sulitjelma Mountains on the left.
The first section in particular has several marshy areas that must be crossed without the aid of boardwalks. The biggest obstacle along the way, however, is a wide glacial river that flows into Lake Sårjåsjávrre and must be forded. It is recommended to cross the river as close as possible to where it flows into the lake. You should plan on wading through the ice-cold water for 15 to 30 minutes.
You’ve already crossed the border into Norway before reaching the river crossing – the E1’s final border crossing before you leave Norway for good. From there, the trail becomes much easier, and in good weather, the lake you hike alongside glows a turquoise blue. At the very end of the lake, in the rearmost cove, lies the very comfortable Sorjushytta, nestled in the heart of the mountain idyll.
