This fairly long and strenuous stage takes you past three lakes, which means you’ll have to cross two mountain ranges. At the start, the route continues quite easily along the road, but this ends after just under 2 km. Here at the end of the lake, there is also a weathered signpost pointing north toward Sør-Skjomen. This path is actually marked on the hiking maps, but in reality (and according to reports from others), it doesn’t really exist.
The E1, on the other hand, follows a clearly marked trail steeply uphill toward the south. Once you’ve conquered the long, steep climb, the trail initially levels out as you approach a construction site (as of 2019). A section of the trail has been torn up here for the Norwegian power grid, and you have to make your own way through the dug-up landscape – not a pretty sight in this otherwise pristine natural setting.
Just past this construction site, the trail climbs briefly once more, and you’ll reach the pass between the Filtinden and Baugefjellet mountain ranges. Expect to find patches of snow here. There’s also a ford here that isn’t marked on the maps.
On the other side of the pass, the trail now descends to the beautifully situated Lake Baugevatnet. Fortunately, the trail runs along the sunnier north side, while the south side, with its towering mountains, is still adorned with plenty of lingering snow. At the end of the lake, follow the tributary further and you’ll reach the DNT hut Baugebua. Here, you’ll cross the river via a bridge. Further upstream, the trail heads toward Sweden.
The short stretch of the hike through Sweden is quite challenging. Because of its sheltered location, there is likely to be a lot of lingering snow here. The trail also continues toward the pass summit, so there are some steep climbs to tackle. On top of that, the pass summit is relatively muddy, making progress rather difficult.
Things improve considerably once you reach the southern, or sunny, side of the mountain range. From here, the trail descends through green countryside to Båvrojávrre, along whose shore the E1 follows to Paurohytta, which lies slightly above the lake.
