This stage takes you back into the high-mountain landscape, at elevations above 1,000 meters. Right from the start, the trail climbs steeply over rocky terrain; here, you’ll occasionally need to use your arms to gain the necessary elevation. Soon you reach a lunar landscape where only small tufts of moss grow. There is still quite a bit of elevation to conquer before you finally get a view of the Storelvvatnan reservoir and, with it, the valley stretching out before you. Just as steep as the climb was, the descent is now just as steep. Along the way, you’ll reach the road leading to the dam, but the trail continues away from the road along the slope. If that’s too steep for you (or if you have knee problems), you can also use the road’s switchbacks. A small cabin comes into view, but that’s not the DNT cabin yet. You’ll reach it as soon as the hiking trail and the road meet for a second time. At the two-story Ny-Sulitjelma fjellstue, you’ll once again have cell phone reception and the unusual comfort of being connected to the electricity and drinking water networks.
