The trail winds through the residential and industrial areas of Kreuzlingen. It then leads through the forest—following the Saubachtobel valley and the Kreuzweg path—to the church in Bernrain (well worth a visit). Here, it’s worth taking a short detour of about 100 meters past the cemetery, as you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Lake Constance.
After that, there’s a long stretch of paved road, except for a beautiful section of forest near Lippodswilen. (There’s a picnic area and a spot to swim in the river.) In the village of Wald, there’s a fountain again after quite a while—and shortly after that, a hill with a bench and a great view, which is perfect for a break.
I found plenty of water fountains and restrooms along the entire route and didn’t need to bring my own water.
In summary: an easy stage, a few moderate climbs, mostly paved roads, occasional shade, and good access to water.
This stage is part of the Schwabenweg (Via Jacobi / Wanderland Route 4) hiking trail.
