After crossing the Gotthard Pass, the E1 leaves the German-speaking part of Switzerland and now runs through the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Throughout southern Switzerland, the E1 follows the same route as the Wanderland Route 2 (Trans Swiss Trail).
The route initially follows mainly mountain paths along the Strada Alta on the slopes of the Leventina Valley as far as Biasca. Although many of the paths are easy to walk, there are a few sections that are somewhat more challenging in terms of gradient, terrain or short exposed stretches. Those who prefer to walk closer to the valley can take the Wanderland Route 7 (Via Gottardo) at the start.
The route then follows a stretch through the valley along the River Ticino to the cantonal capital, Bellinzona. Although the southern edge of the Alps is now slowly coming into view, the route continues with a few ups and downs to Lake Lugano and the picturesque village of Morcote, where the Swiss section of the E1 ends. From Morcote, there is a ferry service to Porto Ceresio in Italy.
Along the way, the route passes through small villages and towns such as Biasca, Bellinzona and Lugano. Accommodation is available at the end of each stage, and there are options for travelling to and from the route by public transport (train and/or bus). It is also possible to break up the longer stages, particularly those between Bellinzona and Morcote.
