Stage description
A very scenic but also long stage with significant elevation gain – mostly on natural trails. In the fall, the path is sometimes covered in waist-high leaves – so plan for a bit more time. Be careful with the time estimates to Tesserete on the signs—they refer to the variant of the Wanderland Route 7 (ViaGottardo). The E1 follows the Wanderland Route 2 (Trans Swiss Trail), which is slightly longer (+ approx. 1 hour) but well worth the short climb after Alpe Zalto.
While the stage begins by passing through the outskirts of Bellinzona, the E1 leaves the densely populated valley after just a few kilometers. The E1 climbs steeply along a scenic trail up to Cima di Dentro and then descends again, passing alongside a military training area on the way to Isone. Those who wish to break up the long stage to Tesserete will find several places to stay here.
The following section is a real highlight. The E1 trail winds its way steadily uphill through varied terrain to the Gola di Lago nature reserve and marsh. Numerous birch trees line the path here. At Alpe Santa Maria, you can purchase locally made alpine cheese. If you still have the energy for a few detours on this stage, you should definitely make a side trip to the summits of Cima di Lago and, above all, Moschera (just before the final descent to Tesserte). From the latter, you’ll enjoy a stunning panorama overlooking the sparkling Lake Lugano.
Even during the pleasant descent to Tesserte, you can occasionally catch a glimpse of Lake Lugano and get a sense of the route for the next stage.
