On this stage, the E1 runs through the so-called Riviera. While that sounds promising, it is actually a stage that is less scenic but long and strenuous. It follows the Ticino River without any significant inclines and, unfortunately, runs right alongside the highway.
Nevertheless, there are always interesting things to discover along the way. The trail passes by a World War II artillery fort, and further along, you can see massive granite quarries. Near Lodrino, you cross the Riale di Lodrino via a bridge; here, it flows into the Ticino. This is an ideal spot to take a break right by the river.
A short while later, the E1 crosses the Ticino and now runs along its eastern bank. A variety of very different views follow one after another in quick succession. At times you walk right along the river through a beautiful Mediterranean landscape; at others, you pass industrial sites and piles of scrap metal. After a longer, quite green stretch that leads through a sculpture park by Fulvio Roth, near Castione just before Bellinzona, you’ll mainly see industrial facilities and piles of rubble. The final stretch just before the city is now much more scenic again. There are also swimming spots here.
Finally, the E1 leaves the river and turns toward the city center. The trail leads across a long pedestrian bridge right through a recreational area with a swimming pool. Bellinzona has a charming downtown area and is characterized by three large fortresses.
