The E1 in Norway, Finland and Sweden

The E1 starts its 8,000-kilometre journey south from the North Cape in Norway. In the northern part of the Scandinavian peninsula, it switches back and forth between Norway and Sweden. A short section also leads through Finland.

The northernmost section from the North Cape through Finnmark to Kautokeino was completed on 4 June 2013. From there, the E1 largely follows the long-distance hiking trails Nordkalottleden and Grensesømmen to Grövelsjön in Sweden. This is where the section of the E1 running close to the border ends, and the route continues via various regional hiking trails through Sweden to its official southern terminus at Varberg.

As the ferry services to Denmark from Varberg and Halmstad (unofficial extension via the Hallandsleden) have been discontinued in recent years, it is currently advisable to take the ferry from Gothenburg to Frederikshavn in Denmark. From there, the Hærvejen leads south to the original E1 route.

 When dividing the route into stages between the North Cape and Grövelsjön, we used the information leaflet published by the Norwegian Hiking Association (DNT) as a guide (unfortunately no longer available online). Our GPS tracks and overview maps are based on the route of the E1 as mapped on OpenStreetMap. All information, including details of accommodation, is provided without guarantee.
